Golden Eagles hold off Cardinals

Wesley Matthews scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds for Marquette (16-4, 3-2 Big East). Jerel McNeal scored 15 points and doled out seven assists for the Golden Eagles, who won their third straight game after losing two in a row, with all five of those games being Big East contests. Ousmane Barro scored 14 points and tallied 11 rebounds for Marquette.

David Padgett scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Louisville (12-6, 2-2 Big East). Edgar Sosa scored 13 points, and Jerry Smith added 11 points for the Cardinals, who had won seven of eight entering the game. Terrence Williams scored 10 points

Facing a 12-point deficit late in the second half, Louisville made things interesting by ratcheting up its defense and forcing some Marquette turnovers. Sosa made a three-pointer with just under four minutes left, and followed that with a layup after a turnover by James, and the Cardinals found themselves within 64-57 with 3:28 remaining.

Sosa stole the ball on the ensuing Marquette possession, bringing the Louisville crowd to its feet in anticipation of the possible comeback, but Williams drew a charging call, and, despite yet another Golden Eagles turnover, the Cardinals could not draw any closer, as Earl Clark missed two free throws with 2:50 left.

Matthews hit a three with 2:26 left that padded the Marquette lead to 67-57, and Louisville never threatened.

Marquette led, 33-30, at the intermission, but opened the second half with a 14-2 run, capped by a McNeal layup that put the Golden Eagles ahead 47-32 with 15:43 left. Louisville answered with a 10-0 run to cut to within 47-42 on a Padgett jumper, but Marquette answered with a 10-0 run of its own, and kept the Cardinals at arm's length for the rest of the game.
