Brewers part ways with veteran P Suppan

06/07/2010 - Milwaukee, WI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Milwaukee Brewers released veteran right- handed pitcher Jeff Suppan on Monday.

The 35-year-old came to Milwaukee via free agency in December 2006 after spending the previous three seasons with St. Louis.

Suppan struggled since signing his four-year, $42 million contract with the Brewers, however, compiling a 29-36 record with a 5.08 earned run average in 110 games (97 starts). He was particularly ineffective this season, going 0-2 with a 7.84 ERA in 15 games (two starts).

Milwaukee still owes Suppan the rest of his $12.5 million salary this year as well as a $2 million buyout for his club option in 2011.

Over 16 major league seasons, Suppan is 135-137 with a 4.72 ERA in 427 games (398 starts) with Kansas City, Boston, Pittsburgh, Arizona, St. Louis and Milwaukee. He also helped the Cardinals win the World Series in 2006, when they beat Detroit in five games.

In a related move, the club will purchase the contract of right-hander Chris Smith from Triple-A Nashville. Smith appeared in 35 games for the Brewers in 2009 and pitched to a 4.11 ERA. He is 2-1 with a 1.71 ERA and 16 saves this season at Nashville.

Colts give the ‘D’ its due

The Indianapolis Colts know that winning the Super Bowl last season put a huge target on their backs, and they expect opponents to go all-out to knock them from the top of the mountain.

They’ll get their first test from the New Orleans Saints this Thursday night. The defending champs had nothing but good things to say about the New Orleans defense this past week, praising their opponents’ pass rush and run-stopping abilities.

"They play very aggressively," head coach Tony Dungy told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "They play a lot of man-to-man coverage, and they come after you. They have good pass rushers, and they're going to try to pressure us, I'm sure."

Both center Jeff Saturday and quarterback Peyton Manning gave New Orleans’ front four props, admitting keeping guys like Will Smithand Charles Grant contained would be a tall task for the offensive line.

New Orleans ranked second in total defense during the preseason at a sportsbook, allowing just under 233 yards per game. Last season, the defense finished 11th in the league after giving up 307.3 yards and 20.1 points per contest.

Not so sound on the ground

Brees says bring it on
