A's set to begin series with sliding Blue Jays

Baseball Betting Lines

04/29/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Justin Duchscherer tries to continue his impressive start to the season this evening, when the Oakland Athletics and Toronto Blue Jays open a four-game set at Rogers Centre.

Duchscherer missed all of the 2009 campaign recovering from right elbow surgery but has emerged as the team ace for Oakland this year, going 2-0 with a 1.82 earned run average and not allowing an earned run in 19 innings over his last three starts.

"It's great just to have him back on the field, seeing him smiling," Oakland catcher Kurt Suzuki said of Duchscherer, who also suffered through a bout with depression. "He went through a lot last year. Everybody knows what he can do when he goes on the mound, that mentality that he has and the way that he carries himself."

The 32-year-old righty's most recent win came on Friday against Cleveland, as he scattered five hits over six scoreless innings. He hasn't allowed a run since surrendering five in 5 2/3 innings of his season debut back on April 7.

Duchscherer will be making his second-ever start against the Jays but has faced them 11 times total, posting a 1-0 mark with a 3.09 ERA in those outings.

Oakland can certainly use a big start from Duchscherer after the A's were swept in their brief two-game set with Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field and were routed, 10-3, in Wednesday's finale.

"It wasn't anyone's best game [Wednesday]," said A's manager Bob Geren, who held a brief closed-door meeting with the players following the game. "I just told them I didn't like what I saw [Wednesday]. I don't think anyone in there liked what they saw. It was a poorly-played game."

Adam Rosales went 2-for-4 with a solo homer for the Athletics, who lost by an 8-6 score in the series opener on Tuesday and have dropped three of four overall. Daric Barton also belted a solo home run in defeat.

Dallas Braden (3-1) got rocked in four-plus frames, giving up six runs on eight hits with three walks to suffer his first defeat of the season.

On the injury front, Suzuki missed his fourth straight game on Wednesday with a sore left side. He may miss tonight's contest as well, as he underwent an MRI on Wednesday and could be headed towards the disabled list.

"Hopefully it's just a strain," Suzuki said. "But that part of the body is so important in this game. You kind of need it to be successful."

Toronto, meanwhile, also comes into tonight's opener limping after getting swept by the Boston Red Sox and riding a five-game losing streak following Wednesday's 2-0 setback.

Vernon Wells and Alex Gonzalez each doubled for the Blue Jays, while Brett Cecil (1-1) allowed just a run on five hits in six frames, but couldn't garner any offensive support with Boston's Jon Lester on the mound.

"Cecil went out and pitched a heck of a game for us," said Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston. "We were just unable to get him any runs tonight. That's about five straight games I've seen this kid pitch and he's done a great job each time."

Second-year left-hander Ricky Romero will try and right the ship tonight as he tries to improve upon his 1-1 mark. Despite having just one win on the year, Romero -- like Duchscherer -- is up among the AL leaders with a 1.80 ERA.

Romero did not get a decision on Saturday against Tampa Bay, yielding just two runs and six hits in seven innings of his team's 9-3 loss.

He beat the A's both times he faced them last year, allowing two runs in 14 innings.

Toronto was 6-3 against the A's a year ago.

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
